The approach here is the opposite: diagnose the real problem, recommend the cheapest fix that actually solves it, and explain it in plain English so you can decide for yourself. No jargon, no upselling, no surprise charges — and if a repair isn’t worth it, Gary will tell you that too.

Gary works in IT and construction during the week — this is a one-person hobby and second job, done evenings and weekends by arrangement. Being straight about that is part of being honest with you.
Drop-off only — you bring the hardware to me; I don’t do on-site or in-home visits.
You order and supply all parts. I’ll tell you exactly what’s needed; you buy it.
No payment up front. You pay when the work is done and you’re satisfied.
Pictures, estimates, disclaimers, reports, diagnostics, and receipts are available on request.
After a repair is complete, I’ll hold your device up to 30 days; after that it’s $1/day storage.
This is a one-person, home-operated hobby and second job — not a full-time shop.
Hours are Monday–Friday 5–10 PM and weekends by appointment. Call or text to schedule.
I’m not a licensed contractor or electrician, and this hobby is not insured.

That Computer Guy grew out of years of being the person friends, family, and neighbors called when their tech broke. What started as favors turned into a full local service — the same practical, no-nonsense help, now for anyone in the area who wants a straight answer and a real fix instead of a sales pitch.

How much do you charge?

How do I pay?

Computers & IT
How do I know if it's worth repairing?
I'll tell you honestly. If a repair costs more than the machine is worth, I'll say so and lay out the options — no pressure to spend on a lost cause.
Will my data be safe during a repair?
I take care to preserve your data and will discuss backup before any risky step. That said, always keep your own backup of anything irreplaceable — no repair can promise a specific recovery outcome.
My computer has a virus / pop-ups — can you fix it?
Yes. Malware cleanup is common work. I'll remove the infection, check for damage, and help you avoid a repeat.
Why is my computer so slow?
Usually a mix of a full or failing drive, too many startup programs, low memory, or malware. An SSD upgrade is often the single biggest speed improvement on an older machine.
Do you help with backups?
Yes. I can set up and, importantly, verify backups — a backup you've never tested isn't a backup you can trust.
Security cameras
Can't I just buy cameras and set them up myself?
You can, and for a simple doorbell that's often fine. For multi-camera coverage, placement, recording, and remote access, getting it planned right the first time saves a lot of frustration.
Do you do the electrical work for cameras?
No — there's no on-site visit for cameras at all. Physical mounting, cable-running, and any line-voltage electrical work is on you to arrange, and anything beyond low-voltage wiring needs a licensed electrician you hire directly. That's never subcontracted through me.

Is security testing legal?
Yes — when it's authorized. I only test systems you own or have written permission to test, with a defined scope agreed in advance. No unauthorized testing, ever.
