“It won’t turn on” covers several very different problems, and most of them aren’t as bad as they feel in the moment. Work through these in order before assuming the computer is dead — a surprising number of “dead” machines are a loose cable or a drained battery.

Step 1: Figure out which “won’t turn on” you have

Each points somewhere different. Knowing which one you have is half the diagnosis.

Nothing at all

  1. Check the actual power. Try a different outlet, and a different wall — not a switched outlet or a power strip that might be off. Test the outlet with something you know works.
  2. Check the cable at both ends. Power cables work loose, especially on desktops. Reseat it firmly at the computer and the wall.
  3. Laptop? Plug it in and wait. A fully-drained battery can take several minutes before it’ll even show a charge light. Leave it on the charger 15 minutes, then try.
  4. Desktop? Check the power-supply switch on the back (the I/O switch above the cable). It gets bumped to off more often than you’d think.

Powers on but no picture

  1. Check the monitor. Is it on? Right input source (HDMI 1 vs HDMI 2)? Try its power and cable separately — sometimes the computer is fine and the monitor is the problem.
  2. Reseat the video cable at both ends, or try a different cable/port.
  3. Desktop with a graphics card: make sure the monitor is plugged into the card (lower ports), not the motherboard.

Turns on, then shuts off

This is often heat or power. Make sure vents aren’t blocked and fans are spinning. On a desktop, a failing power supply or a loose RAM stick is common — that’s where a hands-on diagnosis earns its keep.

Powers on but won’t boot

When to stop and bring it in

If you’ve checked power, cables, and the monitor and it’s still dark — or you get blue screens, a “no boot device” message, or any burning smell — that’s the point where guessing gets expensive. A proper diagnosis tells you whether it’s a $60 fix or whether the machine is worth replacing, before you spend a dime on parts. ⚠ Safety note: Never open a power supply or CRT monitor, and unplug the machine before touching anything inside. If you smell burning or see scorching, stop and unplug it — that’s a repair, not a DIY.
