My PC takes 10 minutes to boot, do I need a new one?
Probably not, man. Ten minutes is brutal, but it’s almost always a software gremlin, a dying drive, or a botched hardware swap—not a sign you need to toss the whole tower. Let’s poke at it and see what’s actually choking it before you spend a dime.
Quick things to check first
- Unplug every USB device except your keyboard and mouse, then reboot. Sometimes a bad external drive, dongle, or printer hanging on the USB bus makes the BIOS sit there and wait for a timeout before it even thinks about loading Windows.
- Go into Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), hit the Startup tab, and disable all the junk you don’t need running the second you hit the desktop. Stuff like Spotify, Epic Games, and Skype don’t need to launch at boot.
- Check Windows Update and let it fully install everything pending, then restart. A stuck update loop can make those circling dots hang forever.
- If you recently had a shop swap your motherboard and CPU (like going from Intel to AMD), make sure Windows isn’t choking on old chipset drivers. Download the fresh AMD chipset drivers straight from AMD’s site and install them.
- If you just added a new SSD or set up a dual-boot with Linux, check your BIOS boot order. Sometimes the BIOS is trying to boot from the wrong drive first, timing out, and then finally finding the right one.
If that didn’t fix it
- Open Task Manager, go to the Performance tab, and watch your disk usage. If your main drive is sitting at 100% for the entire 10 minutes, that drive is either failing or severely overloaded with background tasks.
- Download a free tool like CrystalDiskInfo to check the health (S.M.A.R.T. status) of your drives. If it says anything other than “Good,” especially “Caution” or “Bad,” that drive is physically dying and needs to be replaced.
- Run a Windows Memory Diagnostic (search for it in the Start menu and restart). Bad RAM—especially if you just swapped kits—can cause insanely slow boots and random crashes.
- If you want to dig deeper, open Event Viewer (search it in the Start menu), go to Windows Logs > System, and look for red “Critical” or “Error” events right around the time you boot up. This will often tell you exactly which driver or hardware component is timing out.
When to call a pro
If you hear clicking or grinding noises from the drive, if the PC powers off and reboots on its own during the boot process, or if you see a blue screen of death with a specific stop code before Windows even finishes loading, stop right there. Those are signs of physical hardware failure or a deep-seated driver conflict that requires a pro to pull the drive and rescue your data before you lose it.
